ARMENIA FACTS and INFORMATION


Some facts about Armenia as heard from our guides and experience:


Universities were built in the North of the Yerevan city so that as the wind blows from the North, the brain works better.

Khachatur Abovian is the founder of Modern Armenian Language .There is a street named after him in Yerevan.

There is a library of Manuscripts in Yerevan where even Arabic, Russian, Syrian manuscripts are saved.

There is statue of Hike with bow and arrow. Armenians call themselves as Hike People. They call Armenia as Aarmenik, Armenik, Hayasthan.Hike fought and settled near a Turkish Lake. His grandchild is called Armenia.

Ararat valley is very fertile and Agriculture is the main occupation.

Highest peak in Armenia is 1400m above sea level.

Avan district has many salt mines. There are hospitals here for lung diseases, where the patients are made to breathe salt.
Yerevan is called pink/Orange/Rose /Love city. Alexander Tamanyan built Yerevan city as a gift for his wife as she lost his daughter. So it is called of Love. Also he built all the buildings with Rose shades of frozen volcanic lava stones called Tuff. Hence the name pink city. There are more than 100 shades of tuff.

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass. This is available in Armenia. It can resist Pressure and has magnetic property. It is used in medical instruments, jewellery. It is used in films-Game of Thrones, Dragon Glass. It is believed this stone brings luck. It is exported to japan and used in electronics by Japanese.

Till 1991, Armenia was in Soviet Union.

Azhdahak Mountain is 4090 meters high. There were Active Volcanoes here.

In Sevan there was a war with Arabs once.

Mount Ararat is called as mount of Sorrow , as there are active volcanoes, and when it is active even earthquakes occur. There is 11 kms distance between 2 big peaks. Ararat is a complex of 2 mountains-Maasis and Sis Mountains.

Grapes are a Christian symbol of Paradise, Jesus’ blood.

Sweet grapes are used for Brandy. Not Sweet grapes are used for wine. Winston Churchill used to drink Armenian Brandy. When a different person made the Brandy, he immediately found the change in taste and asked for the previous person to make Brandy for him.

Pomegranate is a symbol of Armenian Diaspora around the world.

Apricots and Nectarines are Armenian basic fruits.

12th capital of Armenia is Yerevan.

Gataas is sweet bread in Armenia.

Yerevan is 29 years old city. It is older than Rome.

The 2nd Republic of Armenia is under Azerbaijan. We can’t enter here from Azerbaijan and can be entered from Armenia.

Armenian Flag:

Red to denote blood as there was always war here.

Blue to denote Peace

Orange to denote Apricots

 The 2nd Republic of Armenia has same flag with white ornaments.

Armenians are Apostolic Christians not Catholic and not Orthodox.

Armenia has a tradition according to which people water each other. This is a tradition from Pagan Period. One of the enemies wanted Ararat territory. So Goddess of love and beauty-Ashtvik left the place .So there was no love, no plants. She cried and the tears fell and roses started to grow on Ararat. People throw water on each other so that there is growth, love in Armenia.
