Morocco Day 6 :Meknes, Volubilis, ChefChouen the blue city

Day 6 :Meknes, Volubilis, ChefChouen the blue city

We had breakfast, checked out and left  from the Riad to Chefchouen.

First we visited Meknes. Here we were supposed to visit Mausoleum, the Ismail, Granary. But we only visited the Bab Mansoor. Our guide asked us to instead reach ChefChouen early, so that we can have more time to explore. We went inside, clicked some pictures  in the garden. We also found some good souvenirs in a shop there, bought them.Meknes is supposed to be the city of universities. Many students from Morocco come to Meknes for higher education.

On the way we visited  the Roman site of Volubilis. This is a quite vast area and much to see. The mosaic patterns are  for display in many many sites.Such beautiful mosaic still preserved to this day, makes it look beautiful. We wandered around for almost 2 hours. There are Bakery, Olive oil mill, houses, aquaducts, Basilica, Temple with altar for animal sacrifices, Palace, Market, Fountains, Baths in this site. The entry ticket costs 70 MAD per person. The guide charges is 200 MAD but optional .The landscape was wonderful with acres of olive trees and  grasslands and agricultural lands.

We stopped for lunch on the way at Motel Rif.The menu was as usual the same set menu-Veg tagine, soup, salad, caramel flan, Yoghurt.

We reached ChefChouen around 5 pm.In Morocco generally Sun sets  soon and also rises late. Sometimes even at 8 am , its pitch dark.We first stopped at ChefChouen gate. Then went up the hill for a better view.We checked into Casa Perleta, refreshed  and immediately left not  to waste any more  time. We asked our  accommodation staff for directions and places to visit nearby.

They told us about a river nearby and also a musical square. We walked fast as per their directions and finally reached the river. River area was a nice place to spend some time. There are restaurants nearby to have some coffee. We clicked some iconic pictures with the blue buildings and colourful flower pots .We also had this local delicacy that was sold something like  roasted chickpea paste with some spices. The same vendor was also selling sandwiches with potato cutlets.

We then visited the musical square , it was like the happening place with shops, restaurants and music. We walked back bought some deep fried peanuts  from an old man to munch on for  5 MAD for 50 gms.Everyone recognized us as Indians and also started singing Hindi songs to us.

We walked back to the hotel after wandering for some time.We were served dinner Veg Couscous and Moroccan tea and biscuits. The serving of the Veg Couscous was something I will never forget. The serving was good for like 5 people.
