Morocco Day 3 :Todra Gorge,Merzouga Desert Camp
Day 3 : Todra Gorge, Merzouga Desert Camp
In the morning, breakfast was very minimal. There was not even eggs .There
was just bread, butter, jam, cheese, orange juice. We checked out and left for
Merzouga.First we went to the Monkey fingers site to see the mountain formed in
the shape of monkey’s fingers .Then we stopped at few more places for scenic
views ,palm trees, mountains, valleys and tea break.
We stopped at Todra gorge, with a beautiful view of the River Canyon. The
water is from a spring from under the ground. The Canyon covering the Sun makes
the whole place magical.
We also visited the irrigation
system of the olden days called Khattara . Khattara is the comb like structure ,
with 1 every 50 meters for 1 family in the desert
.These are not functional now, but we can go and visit them. The canals were built underground and every 50 meters, each house had a well to take water from the canal.
We reached Merzouga at around 3 pm.We had late lunch at a restaurant
nearby .The restaurant was empty, but the food was really tasty. We had hot
chocolate, avocado milkshake, omelettes , tagine.
We were dropped at a place, which seems to be the meeting point of all
tour companies. All the tourists were getting ready for the sand dunes, desert
camel trek. We were served Moroccan tea here. Our luggages were sent by car to our tent. We walked to a camel herd
nearby. There were like around 100 camels. Each tourist had a camel each for the
ride to the tent. The camels were tied to each other in a line .The camel ride
was a wonderful experience in the sand dunes. It was around 20 minutes ride.
As we reached the tent , it was sunset time.We enjoyed climbing up and down and walking on the sand dunes .Then we took some rest in our private 5 star tent with all facilities. Each tent were given a name and our tent was called Fes.We had wonderful dinner with soup, chicken, rice, veggies, apple pudding and enjoyed some time playing Moroccan musical instruments at the campfire and dancing.
Please read my review about the camp here.
